WHAT IS A MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COURSE?
A motorcycle safety course is the standard route to getting your motorcycle license in the US. Most states require one, and completing an approved course typically waives the DMV riding test entirely.
Courses are designed for complete beginners. You'll cover the basics in a classroom or online session first, then move to on-bike training on a closed range with a certified instructor. Motorcycles are usually provided. By the end, you'll have the skills and the paperwork to take to your local DMV and get your motorcycle endorsement.
Requirements vary by state, so check with your state's DMV to find an approved course near you.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE COURSE?
Every approved course covers the same core ground, and most follow a similar format:
Online or classroom session
Before you get on a bike, you'll cover motorcycle types, controls, rules of the road, and the mindset of safe riding. Many providers let you complete this online at your own pace before the range days begin.
On-motorcycle training
This is where it gets real. You'll learn slow-speed control, braking, turning, and hazard response on a closed range with a certified instructor guiding you through every step. A motorcycle and helmet are usually provided.
Courses typically run over a weekend. Most people leave feeling ready to ride.
HOW TO BOOK YOUR COURSE
Check with your state's DMV for a list of approved providers in your area. Courses typically cost between $200 and $300 depending on your state and provider. They fill up fast, so it's worth booking early.
