Tips for Maeving electric motorcycle maintenance in Winter - Maeving®

There are only so many pairs of new Christmas socks that can keep your feet warm in this weather. 2026 is off to a nippy start, but the days are getting longer and Spring is not too far away. In the meantime, here are Maeving's electric motorcycle maintenance tips to keep your bike in good shape during the colder weather:

Battery Health

Riding with a cold battery can impair your bike's performance, affecting both range and speed. In colder weather, ensure the battery reaches room temperature before embarking on a ride.

Additionally, note that batteries may not charge if they are too cold, so it's advisable to bring them up to room temperature before attempting to charge.

To prolong the lifespan of the main batteries, keep them between 60% and 80% charge (3-5 lights on your battery charge indicator) when in storage. Lithium-ion batteries drain very slowly over time if not in use, so check the state of charge once a month. When it drops below 60%, simply charge for an hour.

Finally, it is important to remember that the battery should only be used in an ambient temperature of +14°F to +113°F (-10 °C to +45 °C). Operating your battery at 5 °C or below can decrease performance and range. For optimal results, use your batteries starting from ambient temperatures.

Maintain or Disconnect the 12V Battery

To maximize the 12-volt battery life, it is recommended to maintain the charge level in the primary batteries. When the motorcycle is being used daily, the 12-volt battery will maintain charge. If the primary batteries are charged and installed, the primary batteries will trickle charge the 12-volt battery. However, if the motorcycle is not used and the primary batteries are not installed, the 12-volt battery will slowly discharge. This is due to many factors, including ambient temperatures and motorcycle systems that are still operational with the ignition key in the OFF or LOCK position. If the motorcycle is being stored or the primary batteries are stored off the bike, it is recommended to connect a battery charger, conditioner or optimizer. For further information, see 12-volt battery charging on page 89-94 of your Maeving Owners Handbook.

If you are storing your main batteries indoors, we recommend using an OptiMate Battery Charger to keep your 12V battery maintained once it has been removed from the bike.

Instructions on how to remove the 12V battery can be found in the RM1S Owner’s Handbook on pages 89-91.

The OptiMate charger connects directly from a standard mains socket to your 12V battery, ensuring it remains fully charged during storage.

Check the Tyre Pressure

Do this every 2-3 weeks to ensure it stays at 32 psi (2.2 bar or 220 kPa). You can perform this check at your local service station or do it yourself with a pressure gauge.

Check Bike Functionality

Take a moment to ensure your electric motorcycle switches on and transitions into drive mode. If this does not happen, it is likely the 12V battery has died. In this scenario, contact us at usa.workshop@maeving.com or order a new 12V battery by clicking here.

Book a Maeving Service

Charge On, Muc-Off

When it comes to cleaning your MaevingMuc-Off's products will ensure your motorbike remains easy on the eye and smooth on the road.

The Muc-Off Bike Cleaning Bundle is the essential motorcycle cleaning kit for riding all year. The addition of the anti-moisture Muc-Off HCB-1 spray, which effectively tackles rust and corrosion, makes it the perfect bundle for those who like to ride whatever the weather.

Riding in wet weather means more mud and grit on your bike, so remember to  clean it regularly. Roads are also often gritted in winter. The salt used in this process can be corrosive, so we recommend washing your Maeving after riding on salted roads. For the best motorcycle cleaning products, we recommend Muc-Off - you can explore their carefully selected cleaning bundles by clicking here.
