The problem with most EV charging advice

Most electric vehicle charging guidance is written for car owners with driveways and planning permission for a wall box. For electric motorcycles, a completely different solution exists, and Maeving built the entire ownership experience around it.

The RM1S and RM2 both use dual removable batteries. Each battery slides out of the frame, weighs 16.5 kg, and has a carry handle. You take them out, bring them inside, and plug them into the Maeving charging dock using a 3-pin socket. That's your charging infrastructure.

No installation. No electrician. No landlord permission form.

How the charging actually works

There are three ways to charge a Maeving:

• Remove the batteries and charge indoors. This is the headline. Take the batteries out, carry them up to your flat or into your office, plug the dock into any standard socket. A full charge takes six hours, so overnight works perfectly. A 20 to 80 per cent top-up takes 2.5 hours, which fits comfortably inside a working day.
• Plug the bike directly into the mains. If you have off-street parking near a socket, you can also charge the bike without removing the batteries. Useful for garages, covered parking areas, or anywhere you can run a cable from a wall socket to the bike.
• Use a Type-2 public charging point. The RM1S and RM2 can be used with a Type-2 adapter for public charge points. Practical for longer trips or if your workplace has EV charging installed.

The removable battery option is what makes Maeving workable for the majority of urban UK riders who rent, live in flats, or simply don't have a driveway. It shifts the charging question from "where do I park near a charger?" to "where do I keep the dock?", which is an almost trivially easy problem to solve.

What returning riders in particular should know

If you rode ten or fifteen years ago, the practical friction of petrol ownership is probably still somewhere in your memory: the forecourt runs, the oil checks before a long journey, the winter start ritual. Electric removes most of that.

The charging concern tends to replace it as the mental blocker. The honest answer: for anyone whose daily commute or regular ride is within the 80-mile range, charging twice a week at home is all you'll ever need. Set the dock up once, charge twice a week, ride every day.

The one thing to be clear about

"Charge anywhere" is a phrase that floats around in EV marketing and it's slightly misleading. You can't carry the charging dock on the bike. It lives at home or at work. What you can do is charge at home, charge at work, or use public Type-2 points when you need them. For the vast majority of riders doing regular commutes or leisure rides, home charging is the whole story.

The batteries come out. They go inside. They charge overnight. You ride in the morning.
